Hachijo-ma (Eight-tatami room)
This guest room was where famous writers, painters and journalists from the Meiji period visited and interacted with Shiki.
Among his guests were many of his disciples, such as Takahama Kyoshi, Kawahigashi Hekigoto, Samukawa Sokotsu, Ito Sachio, and Nagatsuka Takashi, as well as Kuga Katsunan, Nakamura Fusetsu, Natsume Soseki, Asai Chu, Mori Ogai, Sato Koroku, Terada Torahiko, Shimazaki Toson, and Akiyama Saneyuki.
In addition to the regularly held “Haiku” and “Tanka” meetings, various events were also held here from time to time.
It was here that Natsume Soseki’s famous novel “I Am a CAT” written after Shiki’s death, was first read aloud.
